Among the four priests ordained by His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. J. Cunnane, Archbishop of Tuam, at Tuam Cathedral on Sunday, was Rev. Fr. Michael Joyce, Mulranny, son of Mrs. K. Joyce and the late Jack Joyce. On arrival home on Sunday evening Fr. Joyce was accorded a tremendous reception. At Newport, a bone-fire blazed to greet the new priest of the parish and Newport I.C.A. members carrying a special banner, together with a number of children, formed a guard of honour.
As the motorcade made its way to Mulranny bonefires blazed at all vantage points en route. On entering, the village, which was en fete with banners and bunting, a parade headed by Mulranny Pipe Band and members of Burrishoole G.A.A. club with their own special banner, escorted Fr. Joyce to Mulranny Hall, where Mulranny Ladies committee entertained all who attended.
On Monday morning Fr. Joyce celebrated his first Mass in Mulranny church, assisted by Rev. Fr. P. Gill, C.C
The Mass was sung by a special choir of adults and children, under Sister Perpetua, who was also organist.
After Mass the Mulranny National School Band, in their colourful uniforms, gave a very tuneful recital in the church grounds, which won the applause of all in attendance.
Later a reception was given at The Great Southern Hotel, Mulranny, for the many guests. Mulloy Brothers supplied the music for dancing.
