Fr. Michael Sammon had not much time to acquaint Himself with his Crossboyne parishioners. His untimely death stunned them into disbelief, in a few short months, he had undertaken quite a lot of work and he was settling in nicely.
I met him for the first time at the Garrymore GAA dance in Churchfield House in early January. He was looking forward to a pleasant and long stay in his new parish but it wasn't to be. The Newport priest had a coronary complaint. But absolutely no one was ready for the shock of his untimely passing.
Parishioners and various clubs formed guards of and honour in both Castlebar and Crossboyne as the multitudes assembled to pay their final tributes to Fr. Michael. They came from other parishes too, where he had worked so hard down through the years - Monivea, Louisburgh, Cortoon and Corrandulla - since his ordination in 1954.
We extend sympathy to his brothers, sisters, relatives and friends.
