Fr John Meaney a Columbian Missionary and a native of The Quay, Newport, died recently in Mindanao in the Philippines, where he has been laid to rest.

The Columbian Fathers will offer Mass for the repose of his soul in St Patrick's Parish Church, Newport, at 1.30pm on Sunday, October 8.

Fr Meaney was uncle of Mr John Meaney, Westport, who used to teach in Holy Family School, Newport, and of Dr Jim Meaney who spends a lot of time at his residence at The Quay, Newport.

The Annual Corpus Christi Procession was held under ideal conditions in Newport on Sunday and the streets of the town were gaily bedecked, for the occasion. Solemn Benediction was imparted on The Square by Rev. Fr. John Meaney assisted by Very Rev. Fr. Killeen, P.P.; Very Rev. Fr. McDonnell C.C. and Rev. Fr: Horan, C.C.
